Emergency medicine
As the name already suggests, emergency medicine comes into question “in case of fire”. Emergencies can “surprise” us every day, whether it’s an acute appendicitis or a cardiac infarction/heart attack. Of course, lumbago or severe migraine are also emergency cases and should be treated as such.
The terms ’emergency medicine’ or ’emergency doctor’ are [in Germany] protected and may be used by physicians only after finishing an extensive education.
My understanding of the qualification of a general practitioner, of a family doctor, is that it should include one for medical emergency. Therefore, I finished the training as emergency doctor and stay updated in this area by consistent continued education.
